How to calculate the number of pallet places you need

We calculate the need so that you don't overpay for empty space or run out of room in peak season.

What a pallet place is

A pallet place is a rack cell for a standard 1200×800 mm Euro pallet with a permitted load height. In a class A warehouse with 12-metre ceilings racks have 5–6 levels, so one square metre of floor provides far more storage places than floor stacking.

Counting in square metres makes no sense for responsible storage: you pay not for space but for occupied cells and operations performed.

The basic formula

The starting point is your average stock level, not annual sales volume. Take the stock in units, divide by the number of units per pallet and add a margin for unevenness.

Formula Pallet places = average stock ÷ units per pallet × 1.15

The 1.15 factor covers uneven shipments and partial pallets.

Use the actual units per pallet, not the specification: the real height of a box including the pallet base and stretch film almost always differs from the calculated one.

Seasonal margin

If your goods are clearly seasonal, the average stock level is misleading. Take the stock in your peak month — otherwise you'll find there isn't enough space in high season, and urgent expansion is more expensive.

With a third-party warehouse this is easier: in the low season you occupy fewer cells and pay less, and at the peak you add places without capital investment.

Common mistakes

Calculating by turnover instead of stock. Annual turnover tells you about sales, not about how much stock sits in the warehouse at any one time.

Forgetting the receiving and shipping areas. Goods that arrive in the morning and leave in the evening also take up space in the warehouse.

Ignoring compatibility and expiry requirements: FEFO logic may require separate cells for different batches.

What to do next

Gather three numbers: average stock, peak stock and units per pallet. With them a manager will calculate a tariff for your goods, not an “average market rate”.
